A sick dog isn’t something any owner wants to have to face. However, there are going to be times when your beloved pet isn’t doing well. Most of the time this is something that won’t last very long. Dogs can become ill just like humans and most of the time they recover in 24 hours or less. Lots of attention and rest is what they need to be able to get back to normal.

Yet a sick dog can be the result of something significant. For example your pet may have consumed poison or some other chemical and be in desperate need of medical attention. If your dog is showing significant signs of abnormal behavior then it is better to err on the side of caution and seek medical attention.

Most veterinarians offer emergency contact services when you have a sick dog outside of normal business hours. Make sure you have this emergency number readily available when you need it. Sometimes if you wait until the next day it will be too late for your dog. You also don’t want your pet to have to suffer for many hours being in pain.

A sick dog can change over the course of time though from one that was happy and healthy. Many owners will associate this with old age though and not anything significant to worry about. Yet a sick dog can actually have a medical concern such as a tumor, cancer, or other major problem.

Getting your dog proper care from the very start will help to reduce common problems though. A sick dog is often the result of not being properly cared for. This can be due to the owner not getting vaccinations, the wrong types of foods, or other concerns. Sometimes a sick dog is suffering from something that is genetic in nature. It is wise to learn about the different things a particular breed of done is prone to before you bring one home.

Fully understanding the normal behaviors of your own pet will help you to easily recognize a sick dog. For example if your pet doesn’t greet you at the door like they do every day or they aren’t eating the same amount of food as they normally do. These types of symptoms are things that only a caring owner would be able to know about.

Some owners worry about the overall cost of a sick dog. If your dog has a chronic condition where regular treatment will be needed that can be a concern. Talk with your vet about the various options that are available. For example there is no health insurance you can get for pets. There are also payment programs offered.

When you have a sick dog, do what you can to remedy the situation at home. This includes paying attention to your pet, taking its temperature, offering water to keep it hydrated, and giving it a safe place to rest. Listen to your instincts though and contact your vet when you feel things are beyond your own control.
